What is a Verruca?

Verrucas, commonly known as plantar warts, can be a frustrating and persistent problem for many individuals. These stubborn growths, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), typically appear on the soles of the feet and can cause discomfort, pain, and embarrassment.

The HPV virus, which enters the body through tiny cuts or breaks in the skin. The virus thrives in warm and moist environments, such as public swimming pools, gyms, and communal showers, making these places hotspots for infection.

While there are various treatment options available, Falknor’s needling procedure has emerged as a modern and effective approach to tackle verruca’s.

Verrucas can vary in size, shape, and appearance, often exhibiting a rough surface with black dots, which are tiny blood vessels. They may cause pain or discomfort, especially when pressure is applied, such as while walking or standing. Additionally, they can be contagious and easily spread to other parts of the body or to other people through direct or indirect contact.

Traditional Treatment Approaches

Over-the-counter remedies like creams, gels, and patches are readily available for treating verrucas. These products usually contain salicylic acid, which works by gradually removing the infected skin layer. While they can be effective for mild cases, they often require consistent and long-term application, making the process slow and time-consuming.

Cryotherapy, which involves freezing the verruca with liquid nitrogen, is another common treatment option. However, it can be painful, necessitating multiple sessions over several weeks. Other traditional methods include chemical treatments, laser therapy, and surgical excision, each with their own advantages and limitations.
