How Footscan Gait Analysis Helps People Move Without Pain

At our Meriden clinic, we see all sorts of patients coming through the door. Some are builders or roofers who spend long hours on their feet, others are keen walkers enjoying the West Midlands countryside, and plenty are runners training around Coventry and Solihull. Despite their different lifestyles, many share a common problem, foot, knee, hip or back pain that just won’t go away.

Very often, the root cause isn’t where the pain is felt, but how the feet are moving. That’s why we use the Footscan Gait Analysis system, a technology trusted by Team GB athletes and elite sports clubs like Manchester City FC, but equally valuable for everyday people who simply want to stay active and comfortable.

Why Footscan?

Traditional gait checks often involve a quick look at your feet or a static mould. Footscan goes much deeper. Each time you walk across the platform, it measures thousands of data points,  showing exactly how pressure travels through your feet, how balanced you are, and whether one side of your body is working harder than the other.

It’s the difference between guessing and knowing. For example, I’ve seen walkers who were convinced their knee pain was down to arthritis, only to find the problem came from how their foot was rolling inwards. I’ve had roofers with aching backs discover that one foot was striking the ground earlier than the other, throwing the rest of their body out of sync.

From assessment to solution

Once we have your Footscan results, we can map out the best treatment plan for you. Sometimes it’s a matter of exercises and footwear advice. In other cases, the next step is a pair of Phits 3D printed orthotics, designed directly from your Footscan data.

Unlike traditional orthotics, which are made from static impressions, Phits are based on your dynamic movement. They’re precise to 0.1mm, lightweight, and can be tailored to fit anything from running trainers to work boots. I’ve fitted them for runners chasing marathon times, as well as for builders who just want to get through a shift without heel pain. In both cases, the relief can be life changing.

The long-term benefits of orthotics

The real beauty of Footscan and Phits orthotics is that they don’t just mask symptoms; they tackle the underlying cause. By improving the way your feet and legs work together, you move more efficiently, put less stress on your joints, and reduce your risk of future injuries. For many people, it means they can keep doing the things they love, whether that’s sport, work or simply walking the dog without discomfort.
