I often hear from runners who have been told to stop running due to foot pain. It’s disheartening advice, especially when running is such a huge part of their life. One particular patient – let’s call her Jo (an alias), a determined female runner, came to me in 2023, feeling like her running days were numbered due to persistent foot issues.
Jo had significant bunions on both feet, Morton’s neuromas, and arthritis – a combination that made running incredibly painful. Jo had tried various treatments, including multiple injections, with mixed results. Despite her best efforts, the advice she kept receiving was the same: give up running.
But stopping wasn’t an option for her, and I was determined to help her find a way forward.
Getting the Right Support with Custom Orthotics
The first step was addressing Jo’s orthotics. She had used custom orthotics before, but they weren’t quite right for her feet. We worked together to refine the fit, ensuring they provided the right level of support and comfort. The difference was immediate – with the correct orthotics, Jo was soon back to running longer distances on the trails she loved.
Strength Training and Running Mechanics
From Struggling to Completing Half Marathons
When we first met, she hoped to manage the occasional 5K. Fast forward to today, and she has completed a half marathon in Nepal, another up Snowdon, and many other running adventures. It’s been an incredible transformation, proving that even with complex foot conditions, running can still be possible with the right support and training.
The Psychological Impact of Returning to Running
For many runners, it’s not just about fitness – it’s about identity, mental well-being, and a sense of accomplishment. Being told to stop running can be incredibly frustrating, leading to feelings of helplessness.
By taking a structured, evidence-based approach, we restored Jo’s confidence and reignited her passion for running.
Seeing Jo cross the finish line of her half marathons was a reminder of why I do what I do.

Looking Ahead – Keeping Feet Strong for Future Adventures
For many runners, foot care is an ongoing process. As we age, keeping our feet strong and well-supported becomes even more important. This patient now has even bigger challenges planned for this year, and I’ll be working alongside her to ensure her feet remain in good shape for every step of the journey.
Her story is proof that with the right interventions – whether it’s orthotics, strength training, or gait analysis, runners don’t have to accept pain as the end of their journey. They can adapt, improve, and continue doing what they love.
If you’ve been told to stop running due to foot pain, don’t assume that’s the end of the road. With the right approach, tailored support, and structured strength work, you might find that you can keep running for years to come.
